Los Angeles, CA— On Tuesday, July 11th, 2023, John Moran Auctioneers presented their ReDesigned sale. The auction offered over 400 lots featuring a variety of styles, periods, designers, and marquee names from favorite masters of 20th and 21st centuries. Works by legends such as Andy Warhol, Peter Max, Richard Wyatt Jr., Itzchak Tarkay, Shane Guffogg, LeRoy Neiman, Victor Vasarely, Corita Kent, Keith Haring, Harold von Schmidt, and Larry Poons represented the art. For sculpture, there was a large collection of Romain (Erté) de Tirtoff bronzes and fine examples by Prince Paul Troubetzkoy. Furniture highlights ranged from Art Deco and Mid-20th Century to contemporary, coming from designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Chiavari, Hudson-Rissman, Baker Furniture, and Michael Aram.
Lot 129: A Pair of 1960s Chinoiserie Slipper Chairs $2,000
Once of the standouts in the category of fine art was lot 212, a stunning bronze sculpture after Prince Paul Troubetzkoy. “Danseuse Jambe Droite Levee (Lady Constance Stewart Richardson),” 1921 was originally valued $10,000-15,000. Troubetzkoy was a well-known artist and sculptor in the late 19th/early 20th century, and his works continue to be highly sought after. Once the bidding subsided, this piece well surpassed its estimate bringing the total to an impressive $18,750*.
Lot 344 was a work by the abstract artist, Shane Guffogg titled, “A Second From Now,” 1999. Guffogg (b. 1962) is a California abstract artist who works in the media of painting, drawing, and sculpture. This bold work more than doubled its $600-800 estimate, leaving the block for a price realized of $2,000*.
Lot 265: A 1961 Leica M3 Single-Stroke 33mm Rangefinder Camera $2,813
Furniture had some great results, including lots 117 and 129. Lot 117 featured two gorgeous mid-century Hollywood Regency gilt bronze and glass nesting tables estimated at $400-600. The tables, designed with a cast gilt bronze trompe l’oeil rope and tassel frame, brought in $2,000*. Keeping up with the mid-century aesthetic, lot 129 offered a pair of 1960s Chinoiserie slipper chairs in the style of Michael Taylor for Baker Furniture. Having an estimate of $800-1,200, these orange-and-brown-checked jacquard upholstered chairs ended with a final bid of $2,000*.
Mid Mod collectors continued their interest to lot 265, a 1961 Leica M3 Single-Stroke 35mm Rangefinder camera. Estimated $800-1,200, this lot presented the camera and a 50mm Summicron lens in the original box with paperwork and sold for $2,813*.
Other noteworthy moments included lot 3, a Peter Max work, “Roseville Profile,” 2005, estimated $200-300 but achieved $1,750*, and lots 328 and 329, Pakistani Monumental terracotta storage jars, each estimated in the $500-900 range but sold for a combined total of $3,375*!
