April 20, Los Angeles, CA – On May 19, ThreeSixty Asset Advisors and John Moran Auctioneers will conduct their first of two court-ordered auctions featuring property from the iconic Los Angeles art and design dealer, Antiquarian Traders. The sale will offer over five hundred lots, including an impressive selection of Continental and American furniture and decorative arts, in styles inclusive of Art Deco, Renaissance Revival, Eastlake, Art Nouveau and Victorian.
A Louis Majorelle-style French Art Nouveau bed set $3,000-5,000
Antiquarian Traders was owned and operated by Mark Abbey Slotkin, son of the Abbey Rentals founder and philanthropist, Stanley Slotkin. For over 40 years, Slotkin procured unique art and design finds from around the world, amassing a collection that was showcased in both his Beverly Hills storefront and his Southgate warehouse. Slotkin’s selection ranges from fine art, furnishings, lighting, and stained glass to Steinway grand pianos. Clocks and an array of decorative objects in gilt bronze, glass, silverplate and ceramic will also be presented before bidders on auction day. With thousands of pieces under roof comprising an estimated 1,700 lots over the two auctions, there will be a tremendous variety for interested parties to browse, both online and on-site during scheduled previews.
Featured highlights of the first sale include a mid-20th century Lalique “Cactus” table with an estimated value of $10,000 to $20,000 [photo 1_14078_32]. Rising on 6 crystal volute-cum-cactus forms, this elegant design is certain to enliven an inspired interior.
Inspired by the caryatid form in Greek architecture, another noted lot is the pair of French gilt bronze and marble tazzas. Classically draped female figures double as columns and appear to bear the weight of the upper striated marble portion. These objects are a nod to the 19th century enthusiasm for design elements derived from the ancient world. Scrolling acanthus leafage, triglyphs and swags of garland chased in bronze with an incredible degree of skill, are further nods to the primacy of the neoclassical sensibility of the age. Estimated at $4,000 to $6,000 [photo_2_14078_206], this elegant pair are sure to incite fierce bidding.

Also classical in influence is a 19th-century Victorian-style figural mantle clock with garniture set, estimated at $1,000 to $1,500 [photo_3_14078_46]. Sitting atop a rectangular base with an inset clock, a Greco-Roman maiden pensively looks up from her reading, an elbow delicately resting on the rail of her fashionable klismos chair. Flanking her are a pair of 4-arm Rococo-revival-style candelabra with spiraling, vegetal forms concealing playful cherubs amongst the foliage.
A Carl Rungius (1869-1959) painting of “Moose and Mate” from 1907 will be amongst the most significant of the fine art offerings in the first sale (estimate: $20,000 to $30,000 [photo_4_14078_9].
Rungius was an accomplished German wildlife painter who immigrated to the United States after a visit to Wyoming convinced him of the splendors of the American West. Rungius received training as an academic artist at the Berlin Academy, often painting from life in zoos and even the local glue factory. An avid outdoorsman, he later painted extensively in the Western United States and Canada and developed a particular fascination for the moose. In the present work, Rungius utilizes a low vantage point to imbue his favored animals with grandeur and dignity.
A sumptuous Art Nouveau bed set will present a unique opportunity for enthusiasts of the period to take home an intact four-piece suite of furniture (estimate: $3,000 to $5,000 [photo_5_14078_159]. Sinuous inlaid wood motifs in the form of natural elements are a nod to designs by the incomparable Louis Majorelle. Other spectacular examples of fine furniture going up for auction include a Renaissance Revival inlaid parlor table, c. 1870s, estimated at $1,000 to $2,000 [photo_6_14078_1] and a Wooton Company Desk, estimated at $3,000 to $5,000 [photo_7_14078_246].
The May 19 auction will be conducted entirely online with links to the bidding site and catalog found at www.360moran.com. Public previews will be held at the Los Angeles area warehouse during the week leading up to the sale and successful bidders will have two weeks following the sale to pick-up their purchases or hire third parties to do so on their behalf. The second and final auction of the Antiquarian collection is tentatively scheduled for early July.
