Lot 11: Constantine Kluge (1912-2003 French) Parisian Street Scene, oil on canvas, est.: $6,000-7,000
American craftsmanship is on full display with exciting selections in the auction. Henry Ford was known to test drive his cars on the steep incline of the Altadena hills just west of Moran’s Monrovia headquarters. It’s fitting that a faithfully restored 1935 Ford Phaeton, consigned from its longtime Southern California owner, zooms into the auction with a $35,000-45,000 estimate. A regal Howard & Co. sterling silver tea service formerly in the collection of a member of the Vanderbilt family heads to the block at $8,000-12,000. Lovers of music will find a gorgeous Steinway Model “M” grand piano with its rich walnut finish strikes the right note at $5,000-7,000.
European art in the auction is poised to perform well at the block. A wonderful still life of fruit by German painter Emilie Preyer is sure to bring $15,000-20,000. A dramatic sculpture by famed French artist Jean Leon Gerome of a woman draped in a veil is expected to sell within its $30,000-50,000 estimate. A colorful Parisian street scene from Constantine Kluge with is cheery palate is sure to appeal to collectors at its $6,000-9,000 estimates. “Angel” by Erté is a fantastic work by the artist and is estimated to bring $3,000-5,000.
Fine furnishings from around the globe abound in the sale. A delightful Chinese automaton clock with colorful glass details and mechanical finishes is sure to inspire strong bidding when it hits the block with a $25,000-35,000 estimate. A beautifully balanced gueridon table by master craftsman François Linke would make a perfect addition to any home and heads to the block with a $2,500-3,500 estimate. A pair of figural silk on cotton rugs with beautifully woven scenes of hunters and their prey is expected to bring $4,000-6,000. A Millet à Paris marquetry bookcase with finely cast gilt-bronze mounts is sure to sell within its $10,000-15,000 estimate.
