As a full-service auction house, John Moran Auctioneers sells just about everything, even items you may never have thought were valuable. Here are a few examples of the types of property we most frequently handle.
If the item is something we could sell successfully in our market and you agree to consign with us, we will write up a formal contract. Since Moran’s holds estate auctions at least seven to eight times per year, and major California and American paintings auctions three times per year, you never have to wait long to see your property offered for sale. The commission rate (the percentage we charge for our services) depends on factors such as the value and rarity of the item. Our rates are highly competitive.
Packing & Transport
If your items are bulky or heavy, or you have a large collection that would be difficult to bring to us, we can arrange for pickups by our own art handlers. We will carefully and professionally pack your items and transport them to our secure, climate-controlled warehouse in our own custom-equipped, padded vans. Since we pack and move your property ourselves, you avoid the risk of breakage, and the expense, incurred by employing third party movers.
Photography & Cataloging
After your items arrive in our offices our in-house photography department will photograph them for our online and print catalogues, live auction websites, advertisements and brochures. We catalogue each item with full descriptions, condition reports and estimates. To attract as much interest in your item as possible, we include multiple images and notes citing book and periodical references, illustrations, and historical background whenever applicable.
Moran’s in-house advertising and marketing department takes advantage of the latest advancements in marketing to promote your items, conducting an extensive national and international campaign using a variety of media. Your items receive wide online exposure on our websites, which are constantly updated to improve traffic, as well as on auction service websites such as AskArt.com and ArtFact.com. In addition, we run print media ads in a variety of newspapers and magazines targeting collectors and the trade. Prior to each auction we mail a full-color printed brochure and send an email announcement to the 15,000 active buyers on our private mailing list.
Realizing the Highest Price for Your Item
To maximize the number of competing bidders, and set the stage for realizing the highest price for your items, we offer several different ways to preview and bid in our auctions. Potential buyers may preview items on our website or at Artfact.com several days in advance of the auction, or in person on auction day at the saleroom, or they may arrange private previews at our offices, where they benefit from the full attention of one of our specialists. We regularly attract several hundred participants to our saleroom at the Pasadena Convention Center, conveniently located in downtown Pasadena, CA, while thousands more from across the country and around the world bid through the simultaneous webcast at LiveAuctioneers.com and Bidsquare.com. We also offer telephone and absentee bidding as a further convenience.
We pay our consignors faster than the competitors, with a settlement date of 21 working days after each auction. Sales proceeds are distributed by check or wire, along with a detailed sales summary.
