Note: Gaston Celestin Delfau de Pontalba (1821 - 1875) was the son of French aristocrat Baron Celestin de Pontalba and New Orleans heiress Baroness Micaela Almonester de Pontalba, who built and oversaw the design of the Pontalba Buildings in that city, as well as the Hotel Pontalba in Paris, which now serves as the American embassy residence. A gifted painter, carver and draughtsman, Gaston is well known for his drawings of St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, which was rebuilt in 1849 by his maternal grandfather. He produced only a small number of decorations, but known examples testify to his skill as a sculptor. Provenance: Property of an Estate, Montecito, CA.
