Note: William Murray owned a tea estate in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) called 'Nayapane' in the mid-19th century. It is believed this sapphire was acquired during this time and was passed down through the family. Upon his death, Murray left a share of 'Nayapane' to his son Lt. Colonel Walter Murray and his wife, Mary Murray. The photo shown here dates from a 1928-1929 visit of Lt. Colonel and Mrs. Murray to the estate. Provenance: Collection of William Murray, Britain; by descent to Lt. Colonel Walter and Mrs. Mary Murray; by descent in the family to the present owner, Private Collection, Glendale, CA. Condition: A chip on the base of the sapphire. The sapphire is medium blue with moderate tone and saturation. The brooch pin back in not original.
