estate stamped lower left and verso, oil on board, 10.5'' x 13.5''. Note: Cooper and his first wife Emma Lampert Cooper embarked on an extended tour of India in October 1913. Cooper produced a number of sketches on the trip, including the present work, from which he painted a group of important paintings that included multiple depictions of the Taj Mahal. Deborah Epstein Solon writes that Cooper was not taken by Indian architecture overall but was overwhelmed by the beauty of the Taj Mahal.'''That has rare distinction', he noted, 'plus an unforgettable and elusive quality which makes it extraordinarily precious.'''
